Zittau's Kronenkino is the oldest sound film cinema in Germany to have been preserved. It was opened in 1910 with seating for 374 persons. Since 2006 the cinema has been run as an arthouse cinema by the Hillersche Villa, sociocultural center of Zittau. In addition to film, the program includes readings, concerts and theater performances, and provides an important alternative to Zittau's blockbuster cinema. Filmgoers appreciate the friendly atmosphere and the feel of the traditional theater. Kronenkino also has a Cinema Club. Seen as an educational tool and an impetus for sociocultural stimulation, Kronenkino with its program centered around the medium of film is an important pillar of culture in our rural region.
